Big news for the month! Ms. Queenie will be starting her maternity leave after the December 4th General Meeting. We are all sending her love and warm wishes as she embarks on this new journey with her family! My child pretends to shoot guns – what do I do? For our parent education session this month, we welcome Sarah McCarthy. Sarah created ECE Connect in 2015 with the idea of connecting early childhood educators together, and offering workshops that she feels are needed in the field. Sarah holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and Training, a diploma in Early Childhood Education and Montessori (0-12 years) and a certificate for Children with Special Needs. She has worked in play based centres, Reggio inspired centres, Montessori schools, and Forest schools. She’s been in the educational field for over 16 years; currently teaches in the Native Education College and Vancouver Community College, and is a board member of the ECEBC Vancouver branch. Our presentation at the general meeting will be about Superhero Play. All children have a right to play. This includes superhero play, sometimes weapon play and shocking themes like shooting storm troopers! Objectives for this workshop: Understand what children mean […]

Holidays are fast approaching and we are getting very excited with a ton of wintery/holiday activities planned. One of the signature events for the year are the Christmas parties that each class will get to enjoy. This year at all the Preschool Christmas Parties, the preschool will be collecting non-perishable food items that will be donated to the local food bank. Please take a minute to bring something down to help the families in our community. Parent Education News The parent education topic for this month is “outdoor play”. The article “When every day is a field trip day” by Catherine McClean (p. 98-102, May 2013 edition, Today’s Parent magazine) was e-mailed to members a few weeks ago and there are also a few paper copies available in the parent education folder at preschool. Please read the article before the meeting so that you come prepared to participate in the discussion. The parent education portion of our meeting will be shorter than usual, recognizing this time spent at home. You are also encouraged to visit the […]

Give Love on Christmas Day – Community Support Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe, but our holiday season is quickly approaching us. For many years our preschool has worked with two community groups, New Westminster Family Place and Fraserside Community Services, to offer some extra support to New Westminster families in need, during the holiday season. (In the past we have donated books, apple juice, toilet paper, and Food/Toy Hampers). We have contacted both of these societies to find out what their needs are for this year. Family Place would again appreciate a donation of books… and the preschool has already ordered these books with free coupons through our Scholastic book program. They would also appreciate donations of gift cards that they will use towards: Purchasing simple snack supplies/bathroom supplies for the programs that they offer Purchasing age-appropriate small toys (that will be given as gifts) and food for the Family Place Christmas Party that is offered to families that attend their programs Gift-cards that can be given to families in need, to purchase their own family groceries If you wish to donate a gift card, Family Place suggests that the following stores would be the most useful: Safeway, Save-On-Foods […]
