It has been wonderful to be able to spend lots of outdoor time enjoying the fresh air, playing in the sand pit, exploring the gutter ramps and going on “trips” in the pirate ship……all while enjoying the changing colours of the trees.

The children are really starting to explore the whole room now. They have begun building large train tracks together (lots of cooperation here!) as well as going down the fire pole and slide. At the art area, we have been exploring painting with many different tools and created a “Painted Forest of Sticks” – it was a wonderful process of some children adding just a few dots of paint, and others choosing to carefully roll the stick to make sure that the whole stick was painted. We are just starting to use liquid glue (which is very different than glue sticks) and we are excited to see what we can glue together.

Throughout this month we have continually seen the children “caring” for stuffed animals, babies, friends, teachers and duty parents. We have seen many picnics being held, playdough cupcakes being made and boxes filled with stuffed animals being toted around the room (so that the stuffed animals are not alone!). To encourage this caring, as well as most of our classes desire to mix anything, we brought out many “ingredients” that the children could add to water in pots, such as beads, corks and plastic lids. Many wonderful mixes, soups, and pastas have been made. Here is a conversation that we heard around the table:

“ I am making macaroni”
“but I don’t like macaroni…..I am making soup”
“What is in your macaroni”
“Chocolate and………Marshmallows!”

We also made individual “Pumpkin Puddings” that the children could mix up on their own…..We are not sure if they enjoyed mixing it more, or eating it more. This was all a great lead into the “Friendship Soup Day.” At the start of Friendship Soup Day day we mixed all the chopped vegetables in a huge pot. The children were very excited to have their turn to put their vegetable in and stir. Then we played outside and the aroma wafted out – it smelled so yummy! Thank you to everyone for all your contributions to this day and also for taking the time to join us. We hope you enjoyed the soup!

During November, we have planned to continue to do some mixing activities, adding spices and lentils. As so many of the children seem to enjoy working with food we will make apple juice on Thursday, November 7. Please bring an apple (or two) to preschool on that day (or if you have any apple tree and would like to donate some apples please let us know). We also plan to go out with small groups into our own Queen’s Park Forest and do some exploring and climbing over stumps and investigating where the forest animals live.

We also want to give you some notice about our class party in December. It will be on Thursday, December 19 and there will not be a regular preschool class that day. The 3am class party is from 10-11am and the 3pm class party is from 1-2pm. Together, we went on our first nature walks through Queen’s Park. Along the way, we collected leaves to make a window collage. We also stopped to fly helicopter seeds, tread softly through the toadstools, and of course, said hello to the squirrels and birds. We peeked into some of the nursing logs and stumps and took a couple group photos before making our way to the playground too. It really was a great day!

Spiders and spider webs have surrounded us both inside and out, so we explored them too. We counted spider legs and spider eyes and spun webs around cardboard looms. Weaving yarn up and around the climbers lead to creating a massive spider above the whole thing…anyone brave enough to come into the spider’s lair and play?

Of course, pumpkins and bats come with everything Halloween, so we’ve done some art activities to decorate the room and your homes as well. We’ve read some our favourite stories, “Big Pumpkin” by Erica Silverman and S.D. Schindler and “Guess What” by Mem Fox. We’ve been acting out Raffi’s rhyme “5 Little Pumpkins” too. We’ve hammered nails to decorate a pumpkin and carved one out to roast the seeds. All leading to our Halloween Bash in full (optional) costume, the stinkier the better in our opinion 😉

Also inside, we used the overhead projector to sing songs and play. We used our shadows to compare with silhouettes projected on the walls and traced our own body shapes. After singing Boney the Skeleton, there was lots of discussion about our bones, so we explored skeletons further with collage and X-rays on the light table. We’re even planning to celebrate Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead!

Originating in Mexico, the first days of November are embellished with marigold flowers, paper cut-outs, sugar skulls (called calaveras), special breads and skeletons dressed in colourful clothes and hats. Altars are set up to honour loved ones who have passed away by celebrating their lives and all the things they loved. Families from our school who celebrate the Day of the Dead will be sharing homemade treats and will help us set up our own display for the festivities.

Also in November:

Nature Walk- November, 15 – Please dress for the weather!
Pajama Day- November, 27 – Don’t dress out of your PJ’s!

And…

BE WARNED!
