Message From Our Teachers

As we say goodbye to January it is wonderful to reflect on the month gone by and revisit some of the activities that happened. This past month we enjoyed our visit to The Gallery in the Park, taking in Paint The Train – A Travelling Group Exhibit featuring trains depicted from 1886 until present day. As trains are very popular at our preschool, you know that this exhibit was enjoyed by our preschool classes! Tracey (who works at the gallery) is a wonderful guide and art mentor to the children introducing the artwork and art mediums, encouraging us to really pay attention to the work displayed and this month she even taught us a song about trains!

The month of January had us celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year as we invited health, wealth, happiness and luck into our lives along with the Year of the Rabbit!

Silly hat and silly hair day was a fun way to let our sillies out and imaginations run wild!

We wrapped up our month long ice-cream shop dramatic play with a concluding ice-cream party at the end of the month!

In addition to all of this, we opened up our rock climbing wall and we have been busy getting to know our classroom pet Toasty Marshmallow a little bit more by getting the opportunity to gently handle her and even brush her!

Looking ahead, the month of February looks like it is full of even more awesomeness!

Mark your calendars as we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day together by creating and sharing valentines, as well as making and sharing friendship fruit salad. This will happen on Monday February 13th and Tuesday February 14th! Details will be shared in our weekly updates.

We will also be having Pancake Day. On Pancake Day we will prepare and enjoy pancakes. Date to be announced.

Our next art gallery visits will be on Wednesday the 22nd of February and Thursday the 23rd. In the month of February we will continue to create works of art for our upcoming art gallery exhibit entitled Rock Paper Scissors Pattern. The art show will feature clay creations, mixed media art, paintings, printmaking and collage! Dates and more information to follow in the weeks ahead! For the past many weeks we have been practicing our scissor skills, learning about shapes and colour, working with clay and exploring loose parts. What are loose parts? Check out our weekly update next week for more information!

Don’t forget the preschool will be closed on Monday February 20th for Family Day and Tuesday February 21st for teacher’s Professional Development Day.

Thanks for a wonderful start to 2023!

Craft Corner: Pizza Hearts

Combine the fun of collages and pizza making with this fun Valentine’s Day project! This craft will inspire your little chef and can be used as a valentine card afterwards.

Materials: Large paper heart (the dough), red paint (the sauce), yellow tissue paper (the cheese), small red hearts (the pepperoni), scissors, paint brush or roller, glue (if needed). Optional: create other “toppings” with different coloured hearts or gems.

Instructions:
1. Cut one large heart shape. This will act as the dough/crust of the pizza.
2. Cut squares of yellow tissue paper for the cheese. For an extra activity children can cut or rip the tissue paper themselves.
3. Spread red paint on the heart like it’s pizza sauce. Remember to leave space around the edges for the crust. Don’t wait too long for the paint to dry…
4. Place the tissue paper cheese on the wet red paint. The tissue paper will stick to the heart while the paint dries.
5. Place the pepperoni hearts on next. You may need to stick these on with glue if the red paint has started to dry.
6. Add other “toppings” if you like – green hearts for peppers or gems for olives.

Write a cheesy quote or pizza pun on the back and your delicious valentine is ready for its special delivery!
