From the President Welcome, June! Wow! Where has the year gone? We are ending the year with a bang with an exciting past month full of yard upgrades, the beautifully done art show at the New Westminster Art Gallery and our first year being involved with the Hyack Festival. With only a couple of weeks of school left, we have lots to be proud of and huge thanks to our community of parents, members, extended family, teachers and staff for all they have contributed over the school year. It has been an absolute pleasure playing a role in the operations of the school and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing group of fellow Executives. A special shout-out to Marti Longstaff, VP, and Monica Hoover, Treasurer for their countless hours. I am thrilled about the fresh group of people coming into the Executive and look forward to hearing about the preschool’s continued success. Lastly, many thanks to the fantastic group of educators – the preschool would not have the reputation it does without you. Thank you! Hoping to see many of you at the wrap-up event on Saturday, June 16th. Until then, enjoy watching your little ones as they […]

From the President It’s the end of another year at QPPS and I am honoured to have had a chance to help guide our preschool on behalf of all of you. I have made so many friends along the way and it has been wonderful to get to know all of the families this year. I don’t want to get too sappy on you – so for now it’s down to business 🙂 Executive Elections  Since our May GM, we have had several families accept nominations for the remaining roles on the executive committee.  Thank you to everyone who has stepped up and offered to help run the preschool next year! We are still looking for a family to take on the role of Orientation Elect.  This is a calendar year position, so requires a families who will be in the preschool for the next 2 years.  The orientation coordinator works with the Enrollment Coordinator, welcoming new and returning families back to the preschool.  The person in this role helps ensure our families are trained and ready to be duty parents in the classroom.  While there is some preparation and training before and after, the majority of the work […]

We’re looking for volunteers for the day.  If you know of older kids, teens, grandparents… anyone who might like to help out for the afternoon – we’d love to hear about it!  Help is needed between 11:00am – 5:00pm on May 14th. Duties include: help with setting up, assisting with games and the BBQ.  For older kids who need volunteer hours for school, we can provide a letter to document their volunteer hours. Also, if you haven’t yet noticed the big, white box on the counter… the chicks are coming! During the first week of May there will be baby chicks hatching at the preschool! So exciting. The chicks will be with us until May 10. From the President Here are a few quick tidbits to start off your December 🙂 Queen’s Park Preschool Turns 50 The planning is well on the way and we need your help! As part of the carnival, we’d like to have a music stage showcasing some of the preschool’s talent. Dance, music, singing… you name it, we want to hear about it. If you know someone – kids or adults – who might like to join our music stage, please let us know. We’re also searching for preschool memorabilia… class photos, artwork, report cards (yes, there used to be report cards!)… all those things parents save, we would love to see. As part of the celebration, we’re planning a visual timeline showcasing the preschool over the decades. We would love to see memorabilia from any decade, but we have a special interest in the 1960’s and 1970’s. New Westminster Family Place Once again this year, Queen’s Park Preschool will be collecting books and other items for New Westminster Family Place. New Westminster Family Place is a non-profit family resource program for families with children from newborns to five years of age. For the last several years our preschool has offered […]

From the President Tell us what you think! Please take a couple of minutes to complete our General Preschool Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VSPBX2J. Over the past few months, the preschool has been redesigning our feedback processes.  Our goal is to have surveys that be used annually with minimal changes needed, results that can be tracked over time, and higher response rates from members.  We are trying to amalgamate the current survey questions into two categories: information about the preschool’s operations (such as enrollment, orientation, jobs, administration, etc.) and classroom programming (such as communication with teachers, classroom activities, etc.).  Moving forward, hopefully we will have two surveys annually which will provide a baseline of information for the preschool’s executive to base decisions on.   Thank to Tara for all her help is reworking our surveys.  Let’s not make her efforts be in vain – please click the link above and tell us your thoughts! Our preschool was very privileged to host a delegation from the  Parent Cooperative Preschool’s International (PCPI) conference, which took place in Vancouver this year.  They toured the preschool, shared ideas and conducted a business meeting while onsite.  PCPI is a North American organization A big thank you to Teacher Jenny […]

From the President Wow do I ever have a lot of news for you this month! First off, don’t forget that the closure dates for Easter are April 3-6 – we will reopen April 6. And for the rest of my news, to keep it simple, I have broken it down into a few topics: Spring Break We have heard from a few families asking about extending our preschool Spring Break to two weeks. As this has been a question ever since the school district moved to a 2 week break, this year we will be discussing it at the April GM, with a vote taking place at the May GM to set the length of next year’s break. In preparation, here is some background information: – When the school district extended Spring Break to 2 weeks, the preschool’s executive at the time decided to remain with a 1 week break and see how attendance was.  As attendance for the 2nd week was high, the decision was made to continue with a 1 week break.  Attendance has been tracked each year, and has been within the normal range. – Last year, at the request of families, the preschool year […]

From the President I am so happy to be the bearer of exciting news… our 3 and 4 year old classes beginning next September are now full!  I’ve already thanked so many people… and I’d like to echo that again here. There have been so many people involved with this amazing success – please know that we are so thankful for your efforts! And for more welcome news… perhaps the most anticipated purchase of the year has now arrived… our new vacuum! If you are reading this and wondering why on earth this matters so much, then most likely you have never used the 2 vacuums currently in use 🙂 The new vacuum is an industrial canister model, easy to use, and will vacuum up virtually anything (but please don’t put this to the test!). It is fairly user friendly, however if you’re unsure, please do not hesitate to ask for help if needed. Also new to the preschool is our amazing new sandbox lid. Again, it may seem like an everyday item, but just picture a folding wooden cover, on a pulley system, with a hand crank. Our kids (and many parents and grandparents) have been highly entertained! A very […]

President’s Note We were just shown to a booth at Boston Pizza. Before even glancing at the menu, my ten year old quickly began to work on the BP kids’ page of “Draw A Picture of You and Your Mom”. My eight year old was writing out her own menu, while my four year old kept poking holes in a Ziploc bag containing pencil crayons. After ordering my comfort food – spaghetti and meatballs, I casually glanced at my big girl’s ‘Mommy and Me’ masterpiece.  She drew two figures, both smiling and holding hands. The taller figure was looking out and telling whoever is looking at the picture, “We are a Pair!” Then she filled the rest of the picture with beautiful background colours of green and brown – similar to a nature trail. My heart melted and I was filled with gratitude. I was so happy to be a pair with her, my first born baby! Wasn’t it just 10 minutes ago that I impatiently asked her to not leave her book in the waiting area at Boston Pizza? Didn’t I yell at her that afternoon about her mess in the room? Wasn’t my stomach churning with acid because I […]

A Note from the President Spring is HERE!!  I know I am not the only one excited about the warmer temperatures, sunshine and blue sky. My kids have been having great time out in the backyard during the last week without me nagging them to put on their coats. Our neighbours have quite a selection of plants and flowers to be added in their front garden and hearing the motor of the lawn mower brings a smile to my face. Believe it or not, I actually opened some windows in our living room today! Nothing quite excites the whole neighbourhood than the coming of spring. We shred our winter jackets and dare to venture out with just one layer of fleece. We enjoy strolling a few blocks down the streets for coffee instead of driving an extra 10 minutes in search of the nearest drive-thru Starbucks. Somehow, the message “it is possible” blows through the air in the warm breeze. What is possible? Items on my list include SUCCESSFULLY potty-training my youngest child, de-cluttering the two storage (aka “junk”) rooms in the basement, and – oh yeah – attempting to get into an exercise that I look forward to doing […]
