Welcome to all new and returning Queen’s Park Preschool families!

The beginning of the school year is always full of such excitement and adjustments. For some of you, the transition to school has been as bumpy as daylight savings to bedtime. For others, your kids have been ready for preschool since they could walk or somewhere in between. I hope you are settling into a new routine with your little ones after our first month back. A huge thank you goes to our teachers, Ms. Donna, Ms. Lyn, and Ms. Queenie and our support staff, Ms. Roop and Ms. Amber, for a successful launch to the school year with our beautiful new indoor and outdoor spaces.

I would also like to thank all our families on watering duty over the summer for keeping our play yard thriving and beautiful, and also to James and Adam for the awesome new teacher/duty parent cubbies and fresh paint. Be it cleaning the school or organizing a fundraiser, designing a website or crunching numbers, this school wouldn’t be the amazing place that it is without you. So many thanks for being part your children’s first school experience.

Our Executive team has identified three main objectives for this year: streamlining our operations and processes for the preschool, increasing our marketing efforts to raise enrolment and setting our volunteers up for success. As a volunteer-run organization, we want the handoff between leadership teams to be clear and thorough to ensure a smooth transition for years to come.

One of the perks of being a part of our preschool is the opportunity to build friendships and have fun with other preschool families. I hope that you will take full advantage of the upcoming social activities and fundraising events. They are a ton of fun and I look forward to seeing you there!

Hope your October is full of things to be thankful for!

Cheers,

Your QPPS President
Glen

Fundraising This Month

I wanted to start off this section with a little funny quote about bringing your cheque books to the next GM – but in my search for the right words, I came across this quote from Anne Frank:

No one has ever become poor by giving. – Anne Frank

Maybe it’s because she was a charming child, or maybe it’s because my kids are interested in her story, or maybe because her story is moving, the quote jumped out at me as a reminder that fundraising helps our kids. So keep this in the back of your mind as you make your way through the October opportunities to help QPPS!

Not-to-miss Parent Education

October’s parent session will feature Joyce Collins, who will present on “Inclusion”. Joyce has been providing services to families and childcare programs in New Westminster as a Supported Child Development Consultant for 13 years. She studied Early Childhood Education, focusing on Special Needs and has been involved in childcare and child development for over 30 years. Joyce enjoys expanding her knowledge through attending courses, workshops and through listening and learning from parents, their children and Early Childhood Educators she has had the privilege to meet and know over the years. Joyce still has “aha!” moments regularly (which gives her such a rush!) and continues to be passionate about providing quality childcare and programs to families.

And – your teaser for November – Dr. Karyn Audet will be speaking on preschooler stress and anxiety.

What’s Happening in the 3s?

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to our three year old families!

September has been a busy month for all! Our time together thus far has allowed for getting to know one another, getting familiar with the classroom space, as well as with the flow of the day which we have introduced slowly through the gradual entry process. This is just the start of building a strong foundation of trust, community and a sense of belonging at preschool. These are the pillars of our teaching practice in the three’s program and we will continue to nurture strong and safe relationships throughout the year. It is woven into all that we do!

Of course play (learning through play) was a big part of the settling into September. An overall favorite was the loft and playhouse!!! All the children enjoyed the experience of a structure just their size! We had many requests for dinosaurs and as such, they have made an appearance in the classroom along with some literature on dinosaurs. This is a taste of how our emergent curriculum works and how we implement it throughout the year built on the interests and curiosities of the children. Our aim is always to have fun and to keep that inquisitive nature and love of learning alive!

We have started our loving kindness practice at our morning gathering time, sending some thoughtful wishes to those friends that are absent from school by saying, “May you be happy, may you be healthy and may you be at peace.” We have also introduced a fun breathing exercise called lion’s breath.

For October we are planning to extend the dinosaur play inquiry with creating and erupting our very own volcano! We are also going to be exploring things in conjunction with the natural cycles around us – some things that may inspire us: apples, pumpkins, Autumn, leaves, bats, spiders and dressing up/costumes.

Important Dates:

  • Thursday Oct. 4 – Individual and Class Photos
  • Thursday Oct. 18- Art Gallery visit
  • Thursday Oct. 25 – Pumpkin Patch (in our very own extended play yard)
  • Tuesday Oct. 30- Dress Up!

Love, Ms. Donna and Ms. Lyn

What’s Happening in the 4s?

After a brief gradual entry period our four year old classes immediately got into the full swing of things! The month of September was largely about getting re-aquainted and of course welcoming some new friends to Queen’s Park Preschool. We are all settling in fairly well and have spent the past few weeks exploring our  brighter and lighter class room, learning some new songs and routines and of course meeting the teachers. We have had our first art gallery visit taking in the wonderful plaster and resin hanging wall sculptures by Susan Laird and we have had a chance to practice our first safety fire drill together. The month of September was about getting comfortable and getting settled in. We also had a puppet show presented to the children by Friend 2 Friend Social Learning Society.

October promises to be an exciting fun filled month in our 4s programs.  Expect to see dinosaurs, trains and pirates amongst us. The children’s interests seem to be leading us all in that direction.

Important dates:

  • Friday, October 5th – class and individual photos by Notting Hill Photography
  • Wednesday, October 17th – our art gallery visit
  • Friday, October 26th – our pumpkin patch pumpkin hunt
  • Wednesday, October 31st – Dress up/costume day

Thank you everyone for your patience and helping hands during the month of September. Queen’s Park Preschool is an extra special place because of you! Together we are all working together to make QPPS the best place it can possibly be for your children!

Warmly, Ms. Donna, Ms. Queenie, Ms. Amber, Ms. Roop and Ms. Jana.
