Happy New Year! Hope you all had a fantastic holiday season with lots of family time, good eats and eggnog.

Fundraising Update

For new fundraising in January, there will be another meat pie order  – perfect for the winter months ahead. Also, be sure to bring your cash/cheques to the GM the monthly raffle. And of course we’ll be collecting big brothers donations!

Parent Education This Month

JANUARY
Nicola Lott from Notch Hill Learning will do a presentation entitled “Play With Purpose – Building Reading Readiness Skills”
Would you like your child to choose books over technology? In this workshop we look at the foundation skills preschoolers need to master before blooming into readers. You’ll walk away from our brainstorm with dozens of quick ‘n’ easy, play-based, early-literacy ideas and a deep understanding of your child’s needs.
FEBRUARY
Next month, Dr. Ian Pike from the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute will be doing a presentation on risky play and its importance on children’s development.

3-Year Old Classroom Information

December felt absolutely magical in the 3s!

The beloved woodland creatures took up a new residence in the classroom – the castle. We discovered ice in the sensory table, painted with foam, helped kitten find her blue mitten, sang of 5 polar bears and decorated the tree. There was a lot of interest shown in bathing baby dolls and it was heartwarming to see the tender loving care demonstrated. We have noticed this same kindness translated amongst one another in the classroom and are so happy to see relationships deepen. In the spirit of giving, we had the opportunity to create collages for the residence of Thornebridge Gardens Retirement to brighten their day (thank you Anita for facilitating this).

Our winter potluck was a wonderful time of connection and celebration, what a treat to all be together!  We really appreciate everyone’s continued support and contribution to the class.

We are very much looking forward to January!

4-Year Old Classroom Information

December was a flurry of activities including snowflake making, ice cube painting, creating winter scenes on canvas using salt, glue and liquid tempra paints!

We expanded on our learning about planets and space exploration.

Our curiosity and questions continue in spider web making and the yarn, twig, pine cone hanging sculpture continues to grow.

As a whole both of our four year old classes are continuing to test our understanding of personal space, boundaries and proximity. The use of Hula hoops has given us a more concrete understanding of teamwork and shared space.

We introduced baby dolls in our play house and loft areas this past month.

In January we will continue to visit and revisit our webmaking, baby care, galaxy exploration and a variety of art mediums including oil pastel, chalk pastel, water colour painting and ink drawing.

Winter, hibernation, woodland animals, including owls, and bears are other topics we will be touching on throughout the month.

Kids In Motion Dance classes begin in January and we are excited to host O.W.L in January as well.

Did you know that January is Family Literacy Month? Our library at QPPS is always brimming with wonderful titles to share. You are always welcome to join us for story time or to snuggle up with your preschooler on our big comfy brown chair and enjoy a book or two together.

Happy New Year everyone. January is sure to be a wonderful learning adventure for all of us!

Warm regards,
Ms Donna and Ms Queenie
